Portraits

Throughout this site you will come across the terms "canvas", "board" and "Panel". Canvas refers to a stretched canvas, board is simply prepared canvas pasted on cardboard (commonly available in art shops) and panel refers to wooden hard board. Usually hard board (availble from timber merchants) has two surfaces - one smooth an the other textured, rather like the grain of rough canvas. Where I have used panel I have opted to paint on the smooth surface to achieve finer detail.
